I like reading about what technology other people use. So here’s my page where I tell you all about what I use on a daily basis.
Philosophy
My goal is to only use free software as I think it’s the right philosophy behind computing. You can read more here I am still hanging on to some proprietary systems but way less than a few years ago.
Software
Here are some programs which I use a lot and like.
- blender - great 3d software
- librewolf - privacy focused firefox fork
- syncthing - to sync files across devices
- localsend - airdrop alternative
- keepassxc - password manager
- xournalpp - one note alternative
- mpv - fast video player
- converseen - image type conversions
Hardware
I have a desktop computer, laptop and phone.
Desktop
I bought my desktop a while back. It was planned to be mainly used for 3d rendering so I bought a more powerfull pc. The specs are:
- RTX 3600 GPU with 12GB of VRAM.
- 32GB RAM
- 24 Core CPU
- 4TB NVME
I am running Arch Linux with KDE Plasma and didn’t have any issues untill now.
Laptop
Unlike my pc, the laptop was a lot cheaper. I had a normal hp laptop for a while but then it suddenly stopped working.
During that time I also started learning more about thinkpads. That’s when I bought a second hand thinkpad as a replacement for my laptop. I started collecting many different thinkpads which I all like but the one I chose to use as my daily driver is a thinkpad T410 which I bought for 27fr. The screen looks nice, the keyboard is great (not as great as the X301 but still nice) and the battery still holds. You can read more about my collection here.
The specs are:
- 4 Core CPU
- 6GB RAM (4GB + 2GB)
- 120 GB SSD
Phone
I have a xiaomi android phone. It only cost 160fr and it works perfectly. Of course I would like to have a custom ROM but none are supported on my device. Xiaomi does have a lot of proprietary bloat garbage but some of it I was able to remove.
Other than that I use mainly apps from f-droid which is an app store with only free and open source software. The proprietary apps are for banking and government related things.
My Home Server
My home server is running on Debian. I refurbished an old 2016 desktop computer. The specs are:
- 8GB RAM
- 4 Core CPU
- 500GB SSD
- 8TB HDD
I removed the graphics card because it was making a weird sound. Something must be wrong with the integrated fan. But because I am using the computer as a headless server I don’t need it anyway so off it goes. I also found a second hand be quiet! fan on the internet for around 20fr which I now use for the server.
The services that are running on this server are
- immich - google photo alternative
- paperless-ngx - for archiving documents
- docker - container
- nginx - for reverse proxying
- dnsmasq - a local dns server
- tailscale - to access the server outside of my home
I sync my photos from my phone to the server. To make it work from outside my home internet you can read more about here
My VPS
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. It is a part of a larger server which you can rent. It does not run on a local internet which is nice for services that need to be accesed from the open internet.
The VPS specs are:
- 2 Core CPU
- 2GB RAM
- 20+GB SSD
The services which run on this server are
